ECU freshman guard Shawn Williams has been named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, and senior B.J. Tyson was named to the weekly honor roll, the league office announced Monday.
In a pair of wins for the Pirates (4-4) last week, Williams came off the bench to average 13.5 points per game. He scored 15 points in 21 minutes on Thursday in ECU’s overtime win over UNC Wilmington and fscored 12 points, including the game-clinching free throws, against Delaware State on Saturday.
Williams has scored double figures in each of the last three games and five times overall this season. He has been the Pirates’ top scorer off the bench six times and first player off the bench in three games.
Playing 79 of a possible 85 minutes in the last two games, Tyson averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He scored a career-high 30 points in the win over against UNCW, becoming the first Pirate to hit the 30-point mark in three years.
ECU host Campbell inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Monday at 7 p.m.
