A Greenville man is in custody after allegedly trying to hire someone to kill his wife.
According to a news release issued by the Greenville Police Department, 35-year-old James Edward Smith of 1601 Brownlea Drive is charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder.
About 7 a.m. Sunday, a Greenville police officer received a call from someone who reported that a man he met through mutual acquaintances tried to hire him to kill his wife, the release said. Greenville police immediately started an investigation, which included an undercover operation, to collect enough evidence to support the caller’s claim, the release said.
Within 12 hours, investigators had arrested Smith, who was taken to the Pitt County Detention Center placed under a $1 million bond.
Investigators are working to determine a motive for the murder plot, the release said.
