A Christmas Carol? Bah Humbug!

AYDEN — Bah Humbug! It’s that time of the year again, and Smiles and Frowns is putting on a fitting production of “A Christmas Carol” on Friday and Saturday at the Ayden Arts and Recreation Building, 4354 Lee St.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a grouchy, less-than-present man living in Victorian London who is rude to just about everyone. Not only does he dislike the general population, he also despises Christmas. However, Scrooge is in for an eye-opening experience when the spirits of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future visit him and take him on a journey that will teach Scrooge the joy of Christmas and warm his heart.

Smiles and Frowns Playhouse is a children’s theatre company that focuses on the involvement of local children ages 6-18 in theatre. Brad Brinkley, a senior at South Central High School and a longtime participant in the Smiles and Frowns family, is cast as the leading role of Ebenezer Scrooge in the company’s fall production. Brinkley has been involved with Smiles and Frowns since he was 7 and appeared in the playhouse’s production of “Hansel and Gretel.”

Since then, Brinkley’s loyalty to Smiles and Frowns never swayed. This will be his last year as a participant at Smiles and Frowns Theatre, and he will end his time there having been in a whopping 19 productions.

“Being the lead role in a production has been challenging but very exciting, and has been an all around great experience,” he said.

Brinkley also touched on how all of his roles at Smiles and Frowns have helped him improve his skills as an actor.

“I feel that my acting has improved significantly,” he said.

Brinkley will be graduating this year from South Central and plans to pursue a degree in political science.

Ayden’s Smiles and Frowns Children’s Theatre will be putting on its performance of “A Christmas Carol,” on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and can be purchased at Edwards Pharmacy in Ayden or The Venue and Artisans in Greenville, as well as from those involved with the production. Tickets will be available at the door on production day for $7.
