Joann Long Cavenaugh, wife of Ed Cavenaugh, died on October 6, 2017 in her home at Brookdale Senior Living in Greenville, NC at the age of 81.
Joann was born in Akron, Ohio, on June 26, 1936, but she moved with her family to Dahlonega, Georgia in October of that year. She grew up in Dahlonega, where she graduated from Lumpkin County High School in 1954 and then graduated from North Georgia College in Dahlonega in 1958 with a BS in Biology. She completed an internship in Medical Laboratory Technology at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, passed the national test, and became a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists in 1959. She worked for five years in the clinic laboratories at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1964, she married Edward Lee Cavenaugh, and they lived in Decatur, Georgia, for fifteen years, except for a brief period in California while her husband completed work on his Doctorate at the University of California at Berkley. In 1983, they moved to Greenville, North Carolina, where they have lived ever since.
Joann was an active member of Red Oak Christian Church, where she served as chair of the Worship Committee, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Diaconate. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, serving as Publicity Chair and on the International Relations Committee. Joann created beautiful crafts of many kinds, including embroidery, macramé, painting, and sewing.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Luke Glenn Long and Minnie Caltrider Long, and a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Williams Long. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Edward Lee Cavenaugh; a son, Gregory Lee Cavenaugh of Winter Springs, Florida; a step-daughter, Gwen Cavenaugh, of Woodstock, Ga; two brothers, Dr. Harold G. Long of Gainesville, Georgia, and Donald L. Long of Norfolk, Virginia. She is also survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10 at 2 PM at Red Oak Christian Church in Greenville, NC. All are welcomed to attend and celebrate Joann’s life. A visitation will be held the evening before, on Monday, October 9 from 6-8 PM, at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send donations to Red Oak Christian Church in honor of the love and support the Cavenaughs have received from that congregation over the years.
