Sophomore guard Jaquavion Latham hit two of three free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining Thursday night, giving J.H. Rose a 70-68 non-conference boys’ basketball win over visiting North Pitt and keeping the Rampants unbeaten through five games.
Keonte Goodman, a 5-11 senior, poured in 29 points for Rose, which rallied from a 14-8 deficit with a 28-point outburst in the second quarter for a 36-33 lead at the half. Neither team led by more than six points.
Sophomore guard Creighton Lebo added 13 points for Rose, and 6-5 junior forward Ben Harris had 12.
Senior guard Dequan Hines scored 18 points to lead North Pitt (2-2), which was coming off a three-point loss to cross-county rival Ayden-Grifton. Junior Matthew Council contributed 16 points, and senior Zaquarius Sherrod-Wilson scored 10.
Rose is home again on Friday, hosting Kinston. The Panthers travel to D.H. Conley on Monday.
South Central routs Bertie
WINDSOR — Junior guard Shykeim Phillips led four players in double figures with 16 points on Wednesday, leading South Central to a 67-37 non-conference boys’ basketball win over host Bertie.
South Central (2-0) led 22-12 t the half after both teams struggled through six-point second periods but pulled away with an 18-point third period and a 27-point surge in the fourth.
Junior guard Jahzeer Baker added 14 points for South Central. Day’Ron Sharpe, a 6-9 sophomore, and 6-7 junior Luke Davis scored 11 each. Davis also had a team-high 10 rebounds.
South Central visits Rocky Mount on Friday.
Young guns lead Jaguars
FARMVILLE — Farmville Central’s young guns came out blazing on Wednesday.
Freshman Terquavion Smith scored a game-high 23 points and sophomore Justin Wright added 18 as the unbeaten Jaguars streaked to a 21-point first quarter lead and cruised past North Lenoir 73-62 in non-conference boys’ basketball.
Farmville Central (3-0) took command from the start and led 31-10 by the end of the third period. The Hawks (3-1) chipped away but never got the deficit under double digits.
The Jaguars travel to rival Greene Central on Friday. North Lenoir hosts Eastern Wayne on Friday.
