FARMVILLE — Farmville Central’s young basketball team took a major step in growing up on Tuesday night.
Freshman Terquavion Smith knocked in five three-pointers, including two in the fourth quarter, and scored 21 points to lead the Jaguars to a 77-71 boys’ basketball win over county rival Ayden-Grifton. Sophomore Justin Wright also provided a big spark, scoring 19 points and hitting the go-ahead bucket with 2:15 to play. The 6-1 guard also had seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Junior Rande Harper added 18 points, and senior Kam McNeill scored 12 for the Jaguars (4-1).
The taller Chargers, who led by as much as 10 points in the first half, got 21 points from 6-8 junior Josiah Shackleford. Leontae Moye, a 6-5 freshman, added 19 points. Junior guard Jordan Atkinson scored 11 points, and 6-6 junior Jakael Gay had 10.
In the girls’ game, Farmville Central used an 18-0 run in the second quarter to cruise to a 58-27 victory. Ra’shaya Speight led the Jaguars (4-1) with 11 points, and Lauryn Pitt scored 10.
Ayden-Grifton fell to 0-4.
Farmville Central hosts Greene Central on Friday. The Rams defeated the Jaguars 65-55 on Dec. 1 in Snow Hill.
Ayden-Grifton hosts North Johnston on Wednesday and D.H. Conley on Friday.
